Yoga practice added strength and clarity to my existing role as a dancer and teacher.
When I took my first yoga class in college to fulfill a P.E. requirement, I was primarily concerned with increasing my range of movement and twisting into interesting shapes to use in my dance and choreography.
A firm believer in the powerful potential to learn through movement, I have always had a passion for dance. This led me to pursue both a BFA in Dance from Western Michigan University and an MA in Dance and Choreography from UCLA. I have taught dance for 30 years and have choreographed and performed in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
Midway through my dance career, as a mother of three small children, I broke my foot and had to stop... stop doing
that which had defined me up until that point. I turned to yoga as a way to reconnect with my body. When my foot healed, my new found practice was so engaging and satisfying I "yoga-ed" almost every day. I loved the discipline required to progress, and I found results in having more understanding of and tolerance for the struggles and challenges in my life.
I rely on yoga as my generous companion.

Knowing that I wanted to add yoga to my teaching repertoire, I went in search of a teacher training program that would fill my high expectations and work with my full schedule. I feel so fortunate to have found Pacific Yoga Teacher Training. Theresa and Kathryn are both incredibly insightful in their approaches, and clear and consistent in their delivery. They encouraged each and every person in our training program to find our own way, follow our hearts, and trust our instincts.
During those days after my injury, I was so taken with yoga, I considered giving up dance to teach yoga instead. However, I discovered the deeper yoga practice also added strength and clarity to my role as a dancer and teacher. My passion for dance grew stronger than ever and my creative energies flowed with abundance. Since then, I rely on yoga as my generous companion.
I now teach Teen Yoga at Taj where the students are into having serious fun. They constantly surprise me with how hard they work. I also teach with Street Yoga, which brings yoga to homeless youth and young adults. This is a truly rewarding and inspiring teaching experience that I would encourage others to explore.
Yoga has led me to a clearer understanding of the human body and mind, as well as a subtle awareness of the parallels between the creative process and personal growth. The paradox that is yoga keeps me curious and content to keep showing up and continue investing a little more of myself in the process of coming home.
